INTRODUCTION: In this study, it was aimed to investigate the relationship between the use of technological device and eating behavior.
METHODS: The sample of the study consisted of 206 participants who applied to the Nutrition and Diet Policlinic in a private medical center in Istanbul. The data were obtained using the Data Collection Form, Eating Attitude Test (EAT-26) and Technology Addiction Scale (TAS). The results were evaluated at p <0.05 statistical significance level.
RESULTS: The Body Mass Index (BMI) values of individuals with and without technology addiction were found to be similar, but it was observed that the ratio of 125 (65.4%) women with technology addiction was higher than that of 66 (34.5%) men with technology addiction. When abnormal eating behaviors were examined according to the BMI values in technology addicts and non-addicts, there was no statistically significant difference between the groups (p=0.524, p=0.143, respectively). Among individuals who were addicted to technology, the ratio of 90 (47.1%) individuals with BMI values between 18.5-24.9 kg/ m2 was higher than those with other BMI values (p<0.0001). Technology addiction status of groups with and without abnormal eating behavior was found to be similar (p=0.828).
DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: According to the results of our study, it can be said that the unconscious use of technology may negatively affect eating behavior and body weight control. In addition, it can be concluded that advertisements and visuals on social media platforms are more effective on women rather than men, especially on eating behavior and body weight.
