Evaluation of Medication Adherence Levels of Hypertension Patients in an Educational Family Health Center

INTRODUCTION: Non-adherence to medical and non-medical treatment is the main reason for uncontrolled hypertension worldwide. In this study, we evaluated the medication adherence levels of patients with hypertension.
METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, a total of 186 patients were included. The form consisted of questions about sociodemographic characteristics, medical information, lifestyle habits, and Morisky, Green and Levine Adherence Scale (MGL), which is used to determine patients' adherence to pharmacotherapy, was asked to the volunteer patients who applied to an education family health center and who received medical treatment for hypertension.
RESULTS: According to the results of blood pressure measurement, 47.8% (n=89) of the patients had uncontrolled hypertension. According to MGL, 14% (n=26) of the participants were found to be non-adherent to their medication. When sociodemographic characteristics and medical history were evaluated, there was a statistically significant difference between educational status and medication adherence (p=0.035). Interestingly, there was no statistically significant difference between medication adherence and control of blood pressure (p=0.132).
DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: The sociodemographic characteristics (except educational status) and medical history of patients with hypertension who applied to primary care had no effect on medication adherence.
